Stix Hooper Continues Flurry of Activity

All about Jazz logoIt all culminates with this. Stix has been named, ten times, one of Playboy and Downbeat magazines’ top three drummers. As a composer, producer, actor, vocalist, songwriter, and recording company executive, Stix Hooper has at least as much, and quite possibly more knowledge about virtually all aspects of music than anybody in the business.

Among his many accomplishments, Stix is a ten time Grammy nominee and relentlessly tireless worker. As the first African-American National Vice Chairman of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Grammy Awards (NARAS) and three term President of the LA Chapter — the largest of all the Chapters — his work with NARAS and the Grammy Awards has been extensive and important to kids and adults all around the world (All About Jazz 2004)

LA JAZZ SCENE

Drummer, Stix Hooper is well known for being a former members of the Crusaders. Significantly at Colburn School of Music’s Zipper Hall, he made a point of showing that his range surpasses boundaries and labels, while also being a very capable bandleader. In fact, his multi-cultural ensemble was often showcased during the concert beginning with the opening number. It was a duet of “Swan Lake” performed by Eugene Maslov-piano and Gabriel Campos-clarinet, a student at the facilitating venue. Also accordionist, Frank Maracco blazed on “Secret Love,” and the guitarist, Andreas Oberg, profoundly soloing..

The guitarist came to the forefront again during an impressive rendering of “Cherokee.” Highly acclaimed flautist, Hubert Laws soared to lofty heights during Brazilian flavored “Samba Del Cielo.” Recalling the heralded 1970s CTI Records years was urban groove, “And Then There was the Blues.” Bassist Del Atkins was prominent with reedist, Scott Mayo and the guitarist profoundly soloing. Changing things up a bit was the addition of Hooper’s daughter, Meghan, who soulfully sang “Nature Boy” with poise and balance that impressed the audience. Rounding out an invigorating evening was hip sounding “Pier Pressure Blues” that included trumpeter, Jamelle WIlliams grandly soloing and interacting with all the musicians. Hooper wailed away throughout the percolating number and soloed for the close to garner a standing ovation.

Internationally Renowned Drummer/Composer/Producer, Stix Hooper, Reconnects with Hometown of Houston

After a quarter of a century, Stix Hooper, internationally renowned drummer/composer/producer, returned recently to his hometown of Houston to reconnect and acknowledge his Texas roots sharing his new music and his myriad of varied experiences.

Hooper, a multi-Grammy nominated artist, is considered one of the world’s top drummer/percussionists, composers, vocalists, producers, and of course known as the founder of the famed Crusaders.

The successful Houston native, spent time, hung with friends and toured the Pro-Mark factory founded in 1957 by Herb Brochstein. In 1951, Brochstein established the Brochstein Drum Shop in downtown Houston where he taught drumming, sold drums and supplies along with being a working musician. Brochstein went on to found Pro-Mark, the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of drumsticks, mallets and percussion products. Since the purchase at Brochstein’s of that first set of drums, sticks and percussion equipment, Hooper and Brochstein, have become life-long friends!

Having developed an interest in music, drums and percussion at a very early age, Hooper started in E. O. Smith Junior High devoting much of his time to the study of all aspects of music including composition, song writing, etc. Then, while at Phillis Wheatley High School, Hooper was Concert/Marching Band President for two years and an outstanding member of the Jazz Band during his tenure at the school also forming a band called the Swingsters, later on becoming the Modern Jazz Sextet. Then on to Texas Southern University where he continued his studies in addition to studying with members of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and other professional musicians. Hooper then headed to the west coast where the Jazz Crusaders, eventually the Crusaders, were established and became a world acclaimed entity.

During his visit, the student body at Phillis Wheatley High School enjoyed an informative presentation from alumnus Hooper, and Wheatley band students participated in an interactive workshop.

Hooper recently released three new recordings from his new record label, Stix Hooper Enterprises. Read more or visit Stix’s Facebook page for news and updates.
